Good snow conditions worldwide has had a negative impact to Colorado ski areas for the start of the season. Marketing body Colorado Ski Country USA has report a 12.5 decline in skier visits during the first part of the season which they measure from October 10th to December 31st. 2.9 million winter sportsmen and women visited the 26 member resorts of Colorado Ski Country USA.
The decline is relative to last winter’s best ever figures and reflects a shortage of snowfall and temperatures too warm for snowmaking in most resorts in the state in October and November, before huge snowfalls began in December. In most cases the snow arrived a few days too late for the crucial Thanksgiving holiday period in late November.
“Seeing numbers this strong after a slow start to the season is testament to our 26 resorts and everything Colorado has to offer,” said Rob Perlman, president and CEO of Colorado Ski Country USA.
“Along with Colorado, other regions and ski destinations had great snowfall in December and because of that, visitation is spread across the country. It’s an indicator of the health of the industry overall.”
