Dubailand Indoor Snow Centre Plan No More

Plans for a giant indoor snow centre at the huge Dubailand theme park currently under construction in Dubai appear to have finally died. The ‘Duba Snowdome’ is no longer featured on the Dubailand website.

The complex, originally entitled ‘Sunny Mountain’ was originally mooted more than five years ago. It originally appeared to be designed along the lines of the patented rotating Ski-Trac and Snowvolution design, however both companies had previously said they were not involved in Dubailand..

18 months ago the 32 Group announced the indoor snow project would cost $1.1 billion and compose a free-standing dome structure with a 220m diameter and 75m height. Thre structure would incorporate a 360-room five-star hotel, one 460-room four-star hotel and a 260-unit residential tower. At the time the reported woprk was on schedule and that buildings would be ready in the first quarter of 2009.

As recently as nine months ago reports said that Dubai Snowdome would be the largest freestanding, see-through dome structure in the world. More than 200m in diameter, and 70m high, reports indicated the Snowdome would indeed include a rotating ski deck, mountain run, training area, snow play area, toboggan run, penguinarium, ice skating rink, ice skating adventure area and a flying theatre featuring a virtual flight over the Antarctic. The ski dome would feature around 6,000 tonnes (5.5 million kg) in its +10 degrees Centigrade winter environment.

The centre was due to be surrounded by nine Iceberg Residence towers which were being pre-sold last year, and were to be flanked by two Crystal Towers all with winter themed architecture. It is not clear if any had been sold.
