Engelberg in Switzerland is staging the world’s longest torchlit run down from the Titlis glacier to the village on this Saturday. The 12 km (seven mile) long run will cover a difference in altitude of 2,000m (6,700 feet) and any enthusiastic and experienced skier and snowboarder can take part, and be part of this world record!
Participants will proceed at a relatively slow pace and in a line. The route will take them through Rotegg and on to Stand from where the piste evens out. They will the continue on past the frozen Trübsee lake, the piste will be lit to the right and left with torches, creating what the organizers hope will be a, “magical, mystical mountain landscape.”
The participants must then schuss through the famous Kanonenrohr to Untertrübsee from where they will tackle the final stage of the descent down to Engelberg.
After the event, the skiers and snowboarders will have the opportunity to share their experiences over a hot punch or a coffee liqueur in the chalet at the valley station while celebrating being part of the world’s longest torch-lit downhill procession.
Participation costs 79 Swiss Francs which includes the lift ride up, a Chinese fondue dinner on the mountain and the guided torchlit descent itself.
The first part of the route, Rotegg, is not everyone’s cup of tea. In the middle of the night and carrying a torch, skiing or snowboarding will naturally prove more challenging than usual. Those who would prefer to join the procession at Stand or Trübsee are welcome to take the Rotair gondola down to Stand after the evening meal and can then take the aerial cableway as far as Trübsee, if necessary. From this point on, the piste becomes less steep.
