Ruka open to mid-June, records 8 month season

Finland’s Ruka ski area, high up close to the Arctic Circle, will again stay open to mid-June this year, clocking up what the resort believes to be the longest winter for a non-glacier resort in Europe, probably anywhere.

Ruka’s slopes opened way back on October 14th last year and have been open ever since. Currently all slopes and lifts are 100% open, and operating until 7pm in the evening in most cases as the area moves to near 24-hour daylight due to the northerly latitude. However for the final weeks of the season skiing continues on the resort’s dedicated ‘summer slope’ which opened for the first time in June 2002 in Saarua.

Saarua is the only slope area in Finland where you can enjoy downhill skiing in June at an elevation of 500 m. The snow is produced by snow machines along with natural snow building a base four meters (13 feet) thick through the winter. This makes it possible to have snow for skiing on in June. This year the season ends on June 12th.
