Himalayan Heli Ski Guides is gearing up for our 2009 heliski season in Nepal. The company plans to run trips in three regions in Nepal’s Himalaya this winter including Annapurna’s north and south side, Everest and the far west region of Humla.
Annapurna I south side (aka Annapurna sanctuary) and the far western region of Nepal called Humla are both news this winter. Both areas are excellent, and like all regions of Nepal, they are quite different from each other.
The Annapurna south region is dream like, guests ski in the valley directly below the south face of Annapurna I and also below the spectacular and well known peak called Machapuchare also known as Fishtail peak.
Its not uncommon to get fresh snow each day as the area has a micro climate, where it has its own little snowstorm in the late afternoon and evening leaving nice fresh snow and blue skies the next morning. Groups return to Pokhara and stay the night there, a popular and relaxed town that has a beautiful lake and breath taking views of the Annapurna’s.
The contrast is quite unusual as one minute you’re skiing at 5,300 meters below Annapurna I and 15 minutes later its 24° and your in sandals, t-shirt and shorts looking at banana trees, monkeys, the occasional elephant, etc. all while looking up at the entire Annapurna mountain range where you were just skiing at, its hard to imagine the two extreme opposites coexist, but they do and its great.
Humla was one of the last regions opened up to westerners in Nepal. Due to this its still very much old Nepal, thus making it a very unique area to visit. The skiing and terrain is excellent, possibly the best in all of Nepal, due to its western location it gets more snow then the east of Nepal.
Himalayan Heli Ski Guides offer private and mixed groups to these areas.
Mixed groups are two groups of six with two HHSG guides per group, and private trips can be from one up to 12 pax with two HHSG guides and helicopter dedicated to the group 100% of the time, for the entire week.
