The stage is set for the 2nd annual Marmot Extreme Skiing & Snowboarding Competition where athletes are vying for part of a $40,000 (NZ) prize pool. The Contest kicks off this weekend in The Pinnacles at Whakapapa Ski Area, the largest ski area in New Zealand.
Hamish Acland, this year’s NZ Freeski winner at Treble Cone, has confirmed he will be competing. Hamish is also the World Freeski Tour #5 ranked athlete. A battle for NZ freeski supremacy is expected as Geoff Small, who has won the NZ Freeski title seven times times (as well as being a three times North American Freeski Champion) and came a controversial 2nd to Hamish this year will also be competing.
International competitors include Andria Huskinson from the USA, Janina Kuzma from Australia, Klas Englund from Sweden and Tim Haggerty from Canada. Other competitors are from Germany, Scotland, England and Andorra.
Last year the inaugural Marmot Extreme Comp exceeded all expectations. It is one of a very small number of Big Mountain competitions in the world that includes skiing and snowboarding (and telemarkers).
