Plans to demolish a landmark gas holder in the city of Liverpool has been the source of debate and concern from an industrial archaeologist.
Liverpool City Council are reported to have ‘low priority’ plans to build an indoor snow centre on the site.
Gas holders were built in an intra war era as a way to store fuel, however they have been rendered obsolete today as new modern ways to store fuel have been developed.
The Beaufort Street Gasholder has been a feature on the city’s skyline for more than seventy years but is no longer required for gas storage and is due for demolition. The owners believe most people think it’s ugly and will be pleased to see it go.
But a member of the Council of the Association of Industrial Archaeologists has asked for a stay of execution on the building, saying that few of these giants from Europe’s past now remain and pointing out that in other countries such as Germany some have been successfully redeveloped for housing or converted in to museums or art centres.
