Vail to Rename Ski Runs to Honour President Ford

The 38th U.S. President, Gerald Ford, passed away Wednesday in Rancho Mirage, California, aged 93. In the wake of his death, Vail Resorts has announced that they will rename a ski trail in the longtime Beaver Creek resident’s honor.

“As one of the first residents of Beaver Creek Resort, President Ford’s love for the Vail Valley was matched only by his many generous contributions to the community over the years,” Rob Katz, chief executive officer of Vail Resorts said Thursday in comments commemorating Ford’s life and mourning his passing. “President Ford truly exemplified the values of our community and what makes it such a special place to live and visit – family, friendship and caring. As a token of our deep affection and respect, Vail Resorts will rename a ski run at both Vail and Beaver Creek in his honour.”

He added, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Ford and the Ford family during this time of great national sorrow.”

In the years following his presidency in 1973–1974, Ford spent considerable time at his slopeside vacation home at Beaver Creek ski resort in Colorado. Vail Valley residents and guests will have an opportunity to come together to celebrate the life of former President Ford Saturday evening, as the community hosts a candlelight tribute at Vail Mountain’s Golden Peak.
