The first Big Air World Cup event of the northern hemisphere’s ski season was staged earlier this month when the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup returned to London.
Located right next to the iconic towers of the dis-used Battersea Power Station, at the Thames riverside, the first big air of the 2010 season took place after the World Cup kicked off down under with a halfpipe contest in New Zealand two months ago.
The event was staged on the biggest big air jump ever created in the UK where a massive ramp was built. The overall length from the top of this steel monster at 32 metres to the landing strip was 110 metres. The ramp plus the area around was covered with 500 tons of real snow.
More than 50 riders coming from 12 nations took part in the event, the main attraction at the London Freeze festival. This year’s festival also saw music acts taking on the stage featuring for example Orbital and Friendly Fires.
