Ghana’s first Olympic skier to build indoor slope in home country

The 'Snow Leopard' will be too busy preparing for the Winter Olympics to fight Apple for naming rights.

Ghana’s first professional skier, and soon to be first Olympic skier, plans to open his home nation’s first artificial ski slope within the next five years.

Known as ‘The Snow Leopard’, Kwame Nkrumah-Acheampong first learned to ski on indoor snow at Milton Keynes SNO!zone in the UK, and will represent his country at the Olympic Games in Whistler in February. He is currently training for that at the new Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead near London.

Returning to Ghama earlier this year, Kwame secured preliminary government backing for Ghana’s first artificial ski slope. It will be in the Akuapem Hills by the town of Mamfe, and he hopes I will be built before the next Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, in 2014.

Kwame’s supporters include other indoor snow centres and charities, including Sabre, the British charity that is operating in Ghana to build schools in deprived areas.

Good job Kwame, that’s a great idea. I am willing to support in anyway i can. As a Ghanaian who took up skiing when I arrived in the US, I will certainly like to hit the slopes when I am in Ghana.
