Injuries sideline two Olympic skiers over weekend

John Kucera was an Olympic medal contender for Canada before this weekend's injury.

It was a disastrous weekend for those looking forward to Canadian and American skiing medals in this winter’s Olympic games in Vancouver.

Not one but two Olympic skiers went down with serious injuries during World Cup races in Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada on Saturday and Sunday, eliminating any chances of either competing in the games. The U.S.’s TJ Lanning, a native of Park City, Utah, fractured a vertebrae in his neck and dislocated his left knee on Saturday, while Calgary native and reigning world downhill champion John Kucera broke his leg on Sunday.

Lanning, 25, has full movement but his injuries are “clearly season-ending,” U.S. Ski Team spokesman Tom Kelly told the Associated Press. He placed ninth in last year’s World Cup competition in Lake Louise.

Canada’s Kucera, also 25, underwent surgery Sunday night at nearby Banff Mineral Springs Hospital after fracturing the tibia and fibula in his left leg, CTV reports. Kucera won the downhill at last year’s World Championships in Val d’Isere, beating out Swiss veteran Didier Cuche. Kucera was considered an Olympic medal contender.
