As more and more ski apps pop up for iPhone users, new technology available in the 3GS models allows applications to read and understand what’s around you.

A revolutionary new ski application by Resort Technology Partners (RTP) uses the ‘Augmented Realty’ technology to help skiers navigate through the hill at select North American ski resorts. The RealSki app uses the video function to allow a skier to look at his or her surroundings (see video above) through the eyes of the app, which tells the skier what runs or lifts are near, and shows points of interest like lodges, restaurants, restrooms, or terrain parks.

Killington, Copper Mountain, Deer Valley, Northstar-at-Tahoe and Stevens Pass were the initial resorts to have RealSki functionality. The initial version of the app is free, and a full version of the app should be available now on iTunes with maps for about 80 North American resorts.

Another new iPhone ski application called Perfect North provides more typical web-based information, including an audio snow report, current weather, live cams, video podcasts, plus news and events and directions to the area.
