Lithuania uses EU funds to build snowdome

Druskininkai is in the south near Belarus and Poland.

The Lithuanian government has decided to divert some of it’s European Union tourism funds to build an indoor snow centre.

Lithuania’s Ministry of Economy announced on Monday that it has awarded 40 million litai (€11.5 million) to the municipal government of Druskininkai to build an indoor ski centre by 2013.

The proposed slope will be one of the longest in the world at 412m (1350 ft) long and will be between 53 and 63m (170–200 ft) wide. It is expected to attract around 150,000 visitors annually from Lithaurania and nearby countries.

Druskininkai is already a major leisure destination in the region thanks to its extensive indoor water parks. The investment money will be taken from European Union regional funds intended for the development of tourism infrastructure.
