59 Year Old Chairlift Keeps Running As Power Cut Closes Resort

Thousands of skiers enjoying three feet of fresh snow in Vermont on Saturday had their day disrupted when a power cut at 12:45pm in Mad River Valley led to lift closures at Sugarbush and Mad River Mountain ski resorts.

All 16 lifts were closed at Sugarbush for the rest of the day, but one of Mad River’s five lifts, a 59 year old single seat chairlift, was able to continue to operate. Known as “old faithful” the lift is one of a few single chairs left in the US and is believed to be the only diesel powered one.

Power was restored around 3pm and both centres operated normally next day.
