Beaver Creek gives away 1000 efficient light bulbs on “Green Day”

More than 1,000 energy efficient light bulbs were given away at Beaver Creek’s annual Green Day celebration on Saturday, March 24th. Skiers and snowboarders were asked to conserve energy by replacing at least one light in their homes as part of the ENERGY STAR Change a Light Pledge.

“Green Day invites guests to ask questions and learn more about Beaver Creek’s environmental management system and year-round programs.” said Zach Tibodeau, environmental coordinator for Beaver Creek.

The resort endeavoured to persuade guests and employees to pledge to exchange1,500 conventional light bulbs for free energy efficient bulbs provided by the resort. This would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 669,000 pounds and save 423,000 kWh of energy. This is equivalent to taking approximately 54 cars off the road or not powering 36 homes from coal for one year, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Apart from free bulbs, several raffle drawings were held on Green Day and The Beaver Creek Environmental Committee provided information on the resort’s year-round environmental initiatives including its Certified Green Restaurant and IdleWise programs.

Throughout the season guests can also visit the Beaver Creek Environmental Learning Center at the top of the Cinch Express Lift (#8) and look for Environmental Fun Facts posted at chairlifts and a four-stroke snowmobile display at the Covered Bridge.
