Beacon and Eggs at Snowbird

In its continuing effort to promote avalanche awareness, Snowbird resort in Utah along with Wasatch Backcountry Rescue are offering a third annual avalanche beacon hunt for people of all ages on Saturday, March 31st. A championship round of Beacon and Eggs will also take place the following Saturday, April 7th.

“We hope to help the community enjoy Utah’s big mountain terrain safely by offering engaging and fun activities that encourage backcountry awareness and education,” states Beacon and Eggs organizer Roger Kehr.

Multiple avalanche beacons will be buried in a one-acre area at Snowbird. Tracker beacons are wrapped in a protective pad to simulate the feel of a buried victim and placed below the snow surface. After the beacons are placed below the snow surface, a snowcat will groom the entire area to hide any tracks.

Searchers will proceed to the buried transceivers using their beacons in “search” mode. Groups can work together, sharing the prizes for recovering the beacon.

The March 31 event is free and open to all people with a beacon, probe and shovel who want to test their skills at finding a buried companion if involved in an avalanche. Other resorts around the US offering similar Beacon and Eggs contests include Solitude, also in Utah on March 31st and Big Sky, Montana on April 1st.

Winners of these and other preliminary competitions already staged at resorts including The Canyons and Alpine Meadows will join the Snowbird winners for the Beacon and Eggs transceiver championship on Saturday, April 7th, at Snowbird.
