Austria’s Solden ski area is in full-on party mode for the last few weeks of April with the World Pyro Award on Friday followed by the Glacier waterslide contest on Sunday.
The World Pyro Award will be a fireworks spectacular up at the Rettenbach Glacier April 27, 2007 with the most creative “Pyrotechnikers” in the world competing to be crowned the best.
On Sunday, it’s back to the Rettenbach, 2800m above sea level, for the MAXXX Mountain Gletscher Waterslide Contest from 11am to 1.30pm. Competitors on skis, boards and in “Crazy vehicles” will attempt to cross a 50m melt water lake.
The Spider Murphy Gang will play a live concert afterwards at the glacier between 1 and 3pm. Special four night accommodation, three day lift pass deals are available through the tourist office from € 248,- per person.
Snow depths on the glacier, which remains open for skiing through much of the year, are currently 1.8 metres (six feet).
