Sunshine Daydream Festival and Pond Skimming at Killington

Killington will host the 9th Annual Sunshine Daydream Festival, a tribute to the Grateful Dead this Saturday, April 16th. Jerry-followers as well as those who simply enjoy soulful music will find an all-day party plus classic New England spring skiing and riding.

This year’s festival will feature outdoor music starting at Noon with Named by Strangers, Green Tea and Liquid Dead. Ben & Jerry’s will be handing out free samples of ice cream, plus there will be a mini shakedown, drum circles and tie-dying.

Next weekend the 24th Annual Pond Skimming will be staged on the 23rd. Clown wigs, witches costumes, knee-long surf shorts, and Mr. Boggs Sex Wax are just a sampling of what spectators might find at Annual Pond Skimming Contest, slated for Saturday at noon.

Killington’s operation crew will build the man-made pond a few days before the event. The pond, located at the base of the Superstar trail, is then filled with chilled water. Contestants begin the “skim” by gathering up as much speed as possible then attempt to slide across the pond and to make it to the other side without getting wet. The more speed one picks up, the better the chances of staying dry. Skiers on twin tip skis and riders on snowboarders claim to have the advantage because of the wider surface of their equipment.

Spectators play a crucial role in determining the winners in a variety of categories including best skim, best splash, best costume and the ever popular, judges award where anything goes.

A week later it’s the 44th Annual May 1 Slalom, open to all holding a lift ticket. Everyone who completes the slalom course on Superstar will receive a free lift ticket for next season. The top racers will receive extra prizes.
