The Lake Wanaka region in New Zealand has seen its four ski areas suddenly transform into a winter wonderland this past week. The area initially received 30 cm (12 in.) of snow and more is expected from storms brewing up in the south.
Snow Park NZ was the first field to get the lifts turning with keen skiers and snowboarders queuing for the first ride up the mountain at 9am last Friday. With up to 15cms of fresh snow across the terrain park, smothering the already 100% coverage the snow machines and groomers had created, the freestyle action was underway.
John Alldred, CEO of Lake Wanaka Tourism said the timely snowfall had created a buzz of excitement in the town. “The ski season has started and snow enthusiasts are keen to strap on their boards, clip in to their skis and make their first turns,” he said.
The roll-out of Lake Wanaka’s ski areas continued with Cardrona then Treble Cone opening on Tuesday followed by Snow Farm later in the week.
It’s a beautiful winter wonderland up here at Treble Cone” said Area Manager Jackie Van der Voort. “Pre season Snowfall was very timely and just what everyone’s been waiting for”.
A foot of natural snow added to a machine made base, with the Volkswagen six seater Express Chairlift, Nice n Easy Platter and Magic Carpet beginner facilities opening first, providing access to some groomed trails on the Home Basin. Opening day was celebrated with Daniel Le Brun bubbles at midday along with Lucky Legs Trio jazz band entertaining the crowd.
With consistent cold temperatures over the past three weeks, 26 snow guns have been operating in ideal snow making conditions. Snow makers had been working around the clock and at full capacity most evenings, creating a snow base, now topped up by natural snowfall.
Ms Van der Voort said that 180 staff had been recruited after overwhelming interest from over 1000 applicants. Staff have been through extensive training this week, and are all very excited about opening and greeting guests in celebratory fashion next week.
The new developments for Lake Wanaka’s four ski areas include: snow making, new on-mountain accommodation, a new terrain park, a new laser rifle range for Biathlon and a commitment to sustainable tourism.
