The Barossa Valley, a wine making region close to Perisher Blue resort in Australia’s Snowy Mountains has been voted in to the top spot on the new Australian Monopoly Board following a nationwide poll which recorded nearly 17 million votes.
South Australia recorded the largest number of votes with about eight million wanting their favourite landmark in the game. More than two million of those votes were in favour of having the Barossa Valley as the most expensive property on the board.
Hasbro, who produced the game and also one of Perisher Blue’s premier sponsors were ecstatic at the result. Hasbro’s marketing manager Amanda Blackhall said “To secure any one of the spots on the new Australian board of the world’s most famous game is a great achievement.”
Australia’s most famous wine region was settled in 1839 by Lutheran peasants and English gentry. Vines were planted from the 1840s. There are now about 60 wineries, large and small in the region.
