Niseko snow season ends season with an average 60 feet of snow

After such a good year at Nikeso, a Japanese prays for more snow ahead of the 2010-11 season.

Niseko in Japan, is widely renowned as the second snowiest ski resort in the world (behind Mt Baker in Washington State, USA), reported its 09-10 season snowfall was, “a little above average” with a total of 18 metres (about 60 feet) of snow.

Dachstein summer skiing season opens following two week lift delay

All systems are go now for glacier skiing at Dachstein glacier.

The Dachstein glacier in southern Austria has re-opened for summer skiing this weekend, two weeks later than planned.  A glitch following the replacement of the first steel cable installed in 1969, was responsible for postponed opening.  As a result lift operators, Planai-Hochwurzen-Railways slashed season-ticket prices.

New swimming pool at Zell am See scheduled to open for winter season

This Austrian resort will be home to a new public pool complex this fall.

Zell am See recently announced that its new public pool complex will officially open this October just in time for the coming winter season.

New gondola on track for 2010-11 season in Solden

A new gondola that looks set to be one of the most architecturally spectacular in Austria is under construction at Solden.

Work on the mountain base of the new lift, up to the Gaislachkogl peak, began last summer to allow the concrete foundations time to set.  The lift proper will be installed this summer ready to begin operation next winter.

Australian ski resort creates winter wonderland by donating 15 tones of snow at national zoo

An abundance of snow at Australia’s largest ski resort, Perisher in New South Wales, left it with a nice problem on their hands. What to do with all this snow? Well the resort decided to donate 15 tones of snow to The National Zoo and Aquarium in Australian capital Canberra to the great joy of the Zoo’s snow leopards and brown bears.

Courchevel back on international FIS stage after 30 year hiatus

Courchevel is ready to host its first FIS race in thirty years.

France’s high-alpine winter resort Courchevel, has just announced that is has been included in the official FIS skiing circuit calendar after a 30-year absence. One of the country’s most prestigious ski resorts will host the slalom portion of the Women’s Alpine Skiing World Cup on December 21st.

Mt. Buller in Australia, like the country’s other major resorts, has had a good start to the season with 15cm (six inches) of new snow ahead of the season after a month of mostly low temperatures allowed it to build a heathly base with snowmaking.
