Canada breaks new ground with Olympics

Olympic Rings go white after Canada gets a gold medal

Let’s face it. These Vancouver Winter Olympic Games got off to a rocky start. The snow melting away at Cypress Mountain. Then, the tragic death of the Georgian luger on day one of the Games. An embarrassing malfunction at the worst possible moment during the opening ceremonies. The cauldron being cruelly fenced off from the public. The number of canceled tickets and event delays wasn’t setting up Vancouver for success.

The road less traveled: Chasing gold, takes a life of its own outside sporting venues

Travel Alberta is hoping Games will benefit tourism

When it comes to attention grabbing opportunities at the Olympics, there are no short lists as people flock to them.

It’s argued, that one could have spent these Games roaming from pavilion to pavilion and still not have enough time to see everything.

Outrage builds as Vancouver Olympic Cauldron is closed to the public

Closed off access to the Olympic Cauldron is the source of irritation with many fans.

One of the largest Olympic symbols is not accessible to the public and is creating quite a stir.

Visitors to site of the Olympic Cauldron next to the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) are expressing disappointment that they are unable to get up close to view Vancouver’s Olympic cauldron.

After experiencing a seemingly majestic opening ceremony the  flame, at Jack Pool Plaza, that was lit by Wayne Gretzky is behind a chained linked fence and the access to the public is restricted.

‘It’s really a bit of a let down,’ said a local resident. ‘We’ve lived through the buildup of these Games for the past seven years and you would think that the public could get up close to take pictures and see the flame’ said Pat Chambers a North Vancouver.

The waterfront cauldron is in a fenced in perimeter and police security greet visitors. Signage indicates the cauldron is off limits and trespassers may be prosecuted.

How Whistler’s Olympic dream began… A tale of Franz’s golden run

Franz's dream: Fifty years have passed since Franz Wilhelmsen walked up the mountain in the hopes of bringing the Winter Olympics to this picturesque B.C. community.

Fifty years ago, when Franz Wilhelmsen climbed up Franz’s run to reach the summit of Whistler Mountain, there was an outlandish claim that it would someday host the Winter Olympics.
Even though the founding father of the well established North American resort won’t be around to see his dream become reality, he’ll be looking down with a big grin.
Ski Rebel Magazine brings you back to one of the last interviews that the Norwegian born immigrant gave. Continue reading ‘How Whistler’s Olympic dream began… A tale of Franz’s golden run’
