Sweetspots videos from Nike ACG

We received this cool video and figured we’d pass it along about Nike’s ACK second winter season of Sweetspots.

Nike ACG’s latest addition to the team, Jules Reymond, was quickly put to work with Absinthe to pull together a sheer master-class in the steeps of AK. The film is released shortly before Christmas but the teaser will give you a flavour of what’s to come.

Already available to view on www.nikeacg.com is Gary Zebrowski’s Sweetspot in Golden, BC, which was filmed by Blank Paper Studio; a backcountry playground of epic proportions.

Swede on summit push, to ski the third highest mountain in the world

The Swedish extreme skier Fredrik Ericsson is trying to become the first person to ski the three highest mountains in the world. This Thursday he started the summit push on the third highest mountain, Kangchenjunga (8586m). The climb up to the summit and the ski descent is expected to take four days. Fredrik’s partner on the expedition is Norwegian extreme skier Jörgen Aamot.

Fredrik Ericsson is one of the world’s leading high altitude skiers with ski descents on some of the highest mountains on earth, including; Peak Somoni, Shisha Pangma, Gasherbrum 2, Laila Peak and Dhaulagiri.

Daron Rahlves takes classes at Ski Dubai

American ski racer Daron Rahlves is at Ski Dubai this week sharing his expertise with local ski enthusiasts at an exclusive ski race camp organised by the famous indoor ski centre.

Sponsored by skiwear brand Spyder, the five-day camp is being held from 24th-28th August and enables skiers to learn race techniques of races from Ski Dubai’s multi-national instructors. The sessions will be reinforced with tips from Spyder sponsored rider, Rahlves.

Mike Mahoney, General Manager at Ski Dubai, said,

We are delighted to have Rahlves at Ski Dubai for this exciting skiers’ camp. This camp is an incredible opportunity for avid skiers to learn from a true professional and we are confident that the skills and new tricks taught will definitely excite the participants.”

On the final day of the camp, all participants can take part in a three-hour competition session which will include a warm-up with Rahlves and a race where participants get the chance to show their new skills and compete for prizes.

Head teacher prepares indoors for Arctic Challenge

A Bradford school head teacher has embarked on one of the toughest adventure challenges in the world after training at the Tamworth Snowdome.

53 year old Angus King, of Thornbury Primary School, took part in the 2008 Polar Challenge, a gruelling event where competitors ski 350 miles across the frozen wastes of the Arctic in search of the North Pole - while pulling a 100lb sledge. Competitors race in teams of three from Resolute Bay in northern Canada to the 1996 magnetic North Pole.

Preparation included camping on ice in sub-zero temperatures at the Tamworth Snow Dome. Competitors were also given shotgun training in case they should come across polar bears.

Plans for unveiled “TELUS presents the Whistler World Cup”

World Cup champions Britt Janyk (Whistler, BC) John Kucera (Calgary, AB), Emily Brydon (Fernie, BC) and Erik Guay (Mont-Tremblant, QC) will lead a team of 16 Canadian alpine ski racers when TELUS presents the Whistler World Cup, Alpine Canada Alpin announced today.

The races take place from Feb. 21st to 24th, bringing to an end a record-breaking season for ski races in Canada. The men race in the TELUS Whistler Super-G on Feb. 21st and the TELUS Whistler Giant Slalom on Feb. 23rd, while the ladies will be on course on Feb. 22nd for the TELUS Whistler Downhill and Feb. 24th in the TELUS Whistler Super Combined presented by UPS.

Colorado’s A-Basin ski area adds 400 acres of deep powder
It’s a Colorado view worthy of John Denver. In one direction rises the snow-covered crest of the Continental Divide. Across the other stretches a wall of jagged white peaks glistening in the morning light. A half-dozen of those distant summits claw more than 14,000 feet into a “Rocky Mountain High” sky.

Eddie the Eagle decries loss of ‘characters’ in Olympics

He was dubbed “Eddie the Eagle,” soaring to stardom at the 1988 Calgary Olympics.

Michael Edwards became the first British man to compete in ski jumping at the games. Short on talent and experience, he’d been jumping for just two years at the time. His humor and constant smile, however, had 85,000 onlookers chanting his name.
