Mammoth task is completed at Austria’s Galtur

An abundance of snow made it easy for a team of snow sculptors to sculpt a giant mammoth in the snow at Silvapark, the ski area above the village of Galtür in Tirol, Austria.

A team of five people took four days to create the beast, and ‘Mammut’ is an impressive six metres (20 feet) high and 12m (40 feet) long.

Austria’s St Anton gears up for spring festival

St Anton in the Austrian Alps is preparing for a full range of events for the final weeks of the ski season.

The Intersport Spring Festival from the 9th to the 11th of April is now an integral part of St. Anton am Arlberg’s event calendar. During the event, some of Austria’s leading snowsport athletes will be displaying their expertise in a range of competitions.

The festival includes Austrian Ski Instructors, Demo-Team Championships, the Arlberg X-Ride Challenge and the Giant Slalom competition.

Freeskiers invade Austrian Alps

Freeskiers love any excuse to head for the Alps.

Austria’s Zell am See-Kaprun is hosting the world’s freeskiing community this weekend at the Austrian Freeski Open.

For the first time in its history the most important freeskiing event in Austria is taking place in the holiday region between the Kitzsteinhorn and Schmittenhöhe. The four day event attracted freeski celebrities like the Swedish freeskiing legend Jon Olsson, Australian Russ Henshaw, and Bobby Brown from the USA.

The professional freeskiers are competing against each other at the ‘Slopestyle Contest’ staged in the snow park on Kitzsteinhorn, attempting to win their share of US $20,000 in prize money.

Try the Olympic sports yourself in Austria

Austria's Tyrol region.

Innsbruck, host city to the Winter Olympic Games back in 1964 and 1976, is inviting skiers to actually try the sports they’re seeing on TV in the current Vancouver Games.

The ski centres surrounding the capital of Austria’s Tirol region offer not only skiing and ice skating but also bobsled, luge, biathlon and even, and in the nearby HoheSalve region, ski jumping.

The Igls Bobsleigh track which was used during the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976 is available for public descents. Guest bobsleighs hold five people and a trained pilot. The minimum age limit is 12 years and runs cost 30 Euros per person, with runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the winter season.

Another iPhone app for skiing

The latest in the growing list of iPhone applications comes from the Austrian Tourist office who have launched the new iSki Austria app.

The application provides the latest snow and weather reports, many ski resort maps, and allows you to contact with other users via chat. It’s free-of-charge and also highlights the closest ski resorts to where you are.

Ice Vikings take over the slopes Of Ischgl

Vickie the Viking won't be pillaging any Scandinavian villages anytime soon.

Thanks to an annual contest, skiers at Austria’s Ischgl ski resort will be able to gaze upon giant creatures carved in ice and snow for the rest of the season.

The 17th annual Shapes in White contest took place on Jan 15-17 at Ischgl in the Austrian Alps, with this year’s theme being the mainland Euro-favourite Vickie the Viking and her friends and enemies.

Ten pairs of skilled sculptors from all over the world took on the mighty task of crafting the cartoon characters from massive piles of snow in a five day challenge. Their masterpieces now adorn the slopes to the delight of skiers and boarders.
