Reports from Germany indicate that the new Snow Fun Park indoor centre which opened a year ago is having financial difficulties ass high fuel prices have caused operating costs to soar whilst at the same time the popularity of winter sports in the region appears to have declined.

Two new magic carpet lifts installed in the Bottrop Alpine Centre in Germany breaks all existing records for a lift of this type.
At 400m in length and with an operation speed of 1.2 metres a second and with drive power of 60 kW the lifts are not just longer, faster and more powerful than existing carpet lifts, but actually double the previous best.

The top cows of Beatenberg will be down in the resort on Saturday 18th October to compete for the beauty show crown of ‘Miss Beatenberg’ in the annual contest at the traditional Swiss ski resort close to Interlaken.
The contest begins at 10am in the Wydi parking area. In between judging local food delicacies will be served to guests, including the gorgeous cheese produced by the entrants during their summer grazing the pastures that form the winter ski slopes. There will also be traditional folklore entertainment.
Snowboarders and skiers can sign up for the first Snowdome camp to take place from July 28th to August 3rd at Bispingen in Germany.
The centre will be offering a huge funpark, incorporating a rail line, a box line and a kicker line. Professional Snowdome coaches will act as guides and DJs will be there to ensure the right musical accompaniment is being played.
A barbecue will be providing the catering and a camping-site will be set up for boarders and skiers to stay in.

The Kitzbuhel Alpen Area pass is the latest to pass the 200 Euro mark for a six day adult pass in the 2008-9 season. A six day adult pass will cost 204 Euros, up from 196 Euros last year and a larger price jump than in recent years.
The Kitzbuhel Alpen Pass is one of the world’s largest lift pass areas covering more than 700km of largely lift linked-runs around Kitzbuhel and the neighbouring Skiwelt and Schneewinkel ski regions. It provides access to about 250 lifts. The pass was formerly available for six days only but is now available for a day or longer.
A local ticket covering the ski runs around Kitzbuhel (Or other parts of the Kitzbuhel alpen pass) is available at a lower cost.

The Vanoise Express is to re-open on 20th December 2008 a year after the famous lift’s unexpected closure due to safety concerns.
The lift links the two giant ski areas of La Plagne and Les Arcs to create one of the world’s 10 biggest ski areas (exact position in the world top 10 depends on the measurement system used), Paradiski, with more than 400km (250 miles) of runs spread over 10,000 hectares.

It’s coming but our friends at biteandchew.com, who produced a SaveOurSnow fund raising T Shirt, are now developing a unique ‘Melt Map’.
This will combine brief summaries of scientific reports published over the past few years by reputable organizations all around the world (UN, EC, universities…) in to how much less snow, on average, individual areas have compared to 20, 30 or 50 years ago and other reports projecting how much less snow there’ll be in the future.
