More than a dozen of the world’s top resorts have now opened for the winter – in most cases thanks to heavy snowfall which has brought several feet (60cm+) of fresh snow to some resorts in the Alps, as well as big falls in the Pyrenees and at least a foot (30cm) to most.

Norwegian Powder Skiing gets easier to explore – as five small Powder Resorts in the northern part of the Fjord Norway region launch a new ski pass – giving access to 25 lifts and 53 slopes in the Sunnmore region. This is good news for any skier searching untracked powder, said manager Hans Anders Rindhølen at Strandafjellet Skiresort. The ”Alpepass” lift-pass is available from the 2008/2009-season on.
Almost every season the area was rated on the top 10 list on average snowfall in Europe’
, says Rindhølen. For those of you that read subtitles in big International ski movies may recognize places such as Strandafjellet, Stryn and Fjellsetra. The “Get Lucky” ski movie from Field Productions contains a bonus track from Strandafjellet - worth checking out.
The Sunnmøre Alps mountain range is amazing also for ski touring and winter climbing, and the best winter surf of Europe is only two hours away - at Hoddevika, Stadlandet.

One of Finland’s leading ski areas, Ylläs, has sponsored a new indoor snow facility for the country’s capital city.
Ylläs-Halli, Arctic Sport Center, is being built by a company called Arctic Sport Center Ltd builds the Halli together with Kiviconstruction Oy.
Ylläs-Halli aims to open at the beginning of 2009.
It’s coming but our friends at biteandchew.com, who produced a SaveOurSnow fund raising T Shirt, are now developing a unique ‘Melt Map’.
This will combine brief summaries of scientific reports published over the past few years by reputable organizations all around the world (UN, EC, universities…) in to how much less snow, on average, individual areas have compared to 20, 30 or 50 years ago and other reports projecting how much less snow there’ll be in the future.
The Green Ski Resort Guide now has 25 per cent (50 more) ski areas registering over 250 in total. Many of the new additions to the world’s leading 200 resorts that were originally included are smaller resorts which are doing big things for the environment, so it seemed odd not to include them.
We also now have ski areas from New Zealand, Spain, Chile and Korea which were not previously featured.

Austrian Mario Matt wins second straight World Cup slalom race
Mario Matt of Austria was on the top of the podium in a World Cup slalom again today, winning in Zagreb, CRO in a two-run combined time of one minute 51.36 seconds.
Matt, who currently sits second in the World Cup slalom standings behind Jean-Baptiste Grange of France, was a winner less than a month ago at the classic Night Race in Schladming, AUT. He also won in Adelboden, SUI earlier in January.
Ski Jumping: Romoeren wins at Willingen
Norway’s Bjoern Einar Romoeren won the World Cup ski jumping contest at Willingen, Germany on Sunday, with compatriot Anders Bardal in third. Slovenia’s Jernej Damjan came second.
