Southern hemisphere 2008 season ends

Turoa Ski Area on Mt Ruapehu closes for the winter season on Sunday November 15 making it the last Ski Area in the southern hemisphere to do so.
Mt Ruapehu marketing manager, Mike Smith says the season of five month and two days is one of the longest they’ve had.

Design a snowpark for Verbier online

Verbier is currently running an online competition inviting budding park designers to send in a design for the rails and boxes of the famous resort’s Swatch Snowpark.
Permanent flags will also be created on the basis of the winning drawings from the contest which runs until November 22nd.

The winner will receive a 4 Vallées season pass for the winter 08-09, and two runners-up will win a paragliding flight from Les Ruinettes to Le Châble.

The Park will open on December 8th in time for the first event of the season on December 13th and 14th, the Verbier Ride.

Taos opens borders to Boarders

As previewed at the start of the season, Taos in New Mexico, one of four US resorts that still banned snowboarders, has opened its slopes to all after its final ‘skiers only’ day starting next season.
Thousands of boarders from around the US descended on the resort at the weekend to welcome the end of what is popularly regarded as ‘Alpine apartheid.”
The remaining ski areas still banning boarders are Alta and Deer Valley in Utah and Mad River Glen in Vermont.

China Building Indoor Half Pipe to Train Olympians

China’s Winter Olympic committee have identified the half pipe as the country’s second best bet for a medal at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, even though the first half pipe in China opened only in 2003.
