More Snowmaking in Australia

Australia’s Mt Hotham ski area has announced that the resort has purchased five
new snowmaking guns at a cost of $600,000 ahead of the coming season.

The guns will be permanently stationed down Sundowner. This will provide keen skiers and boarders with two reliable, man-made snow routes to the bottom of Heavenly Valley; and will in turn create more space on Slalom Gully.

Beacon and Eggs at Snowbird

In its continuing effort to promote avalanche awareness, Snowbird resort in Utah along with Wasatch Backcountry Rescue are offering a third annual avalanche beacon hunt for people of all ages on Saturday, March 31st. A championship round of Beacon and Eggs will also take place the following Saturday, April 7th.

Improvements at Catedral

Argentina’s Catedral ski area, the largest in South America, has unveiled a new quad chairlift ahead of the coming 2007 season.

The new Amancay quad replaces the old Teleski 2000 lift and ascends from a base at 1,770m to 2,500m in only seven minutes, ascending more than 700 meters with a capacity of 2,000 skiers per hour. The Diente de Caballo triple chair links the new quad to the Punta Princesa area.

Smugglers’ Notch resort gives incentives for putting the brakes on global warming

Smugglers’ Notch resort in Vermont is sponsoring NuRide, an incentive-based ridesharing network, to encourage thousands of commuters to share rides resulting in 250,000 fewer miles driven and 100 fewer tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Participating commuters will be rewarded with free ski lift tickets and chances to win valuable family vacation packages.

The Smugglers’ Notch sponsorship on the NuRide network is part of the New York Tri-State 5,000,000 Mile Rideshare Challenge, a regional event that brings together commuters, sponsors and local governments to help alleviate traffic congestion, air pollution and global warming.

Queenstown winter festival

The 2007 Lindauer Queenstown Winter Festival, one of the biggest winter party events in New Zealand is lined up for the week of June 22nd to July 1st.

This year’s theme is ‘big’ with events ranging from the ‘Big Night Out’ styled on Auckland’s Big Day Out, to the ‘SkiDealsNZ.com Big Air’ that attracts some of the best boarders and skiers in the business, the programme is full of events guaranteeing fun in New Zealand’s winter capital, according to Festival Manager Sally Feinerman.

Beaver Creek gives away 1000 efficient light bulbs on “Green Day”

More than 1,000 energy efficient light bulbs were given away at Beaver Creek’s annual Green Day celebration on Saturday, March 24th. Skiers and snowboarders were asked to conserve energy by replacing at least one light in their homes as part of the ENERGY STAR Change a Light Pledge.

Mountain Biking at night at Les 2 Alpes

Despite the slow start to the ski season, Les 2 Alpes ski resort in France is diversifying by introducing night time mountain biking under the resort’s glacier.

Les 2Alpes has great snow conditions at present with 2.8m (Over nine feet) of snow on upper slopes leading to great conditions which should promise a good summer ski season too, later in the year.
