Half Pint Park to open at Snow Park NZ

Snow Park NZ in New Zealand already will build on its international reputation for their exciting and innovative terrain this winter by turning attention to the growth of the sport to attract a broader mix of visitors.

The creation of the Half Pint Park aims to encourage novice riders into the freestyle world of snowboarding and skiing. The new park includes the same features as the main park but on a smaller scale and on less steep terrain, offering new riders the chance to learn in a fun and relaxed environment.

Everest Challenge Rides Again

After the success of the Ski Everest Challenge 2006 organised to raise funds for Cancer Research at the SNO!zone in Xscape, Braehead, Glasgow last year, the organisers are staging the event again in 2007.

Last year the event raised a massive £15,000 for Cancer Research UK and the organisers are aiming to at least match the figure when the event is repeated on Saturday 30th June this year.

SNO! SHOW at SNO!zone

A revised formula is going to be introduced at this Fall’s SNO! SHOW when it rolls out September 29th and 30th.

With the use of the real snow slope at SNO!zone, the show will be the biggest UK-based Ski and Board show where customers can actually try out equipment on the snow.

Snowbird Still Open

Continuing the tradition of maintaining the longest ski and snowboard season in Utah, Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort officials have announced that the resort will remain open daily through to Sunday, May 13 and then weekends thereafter, conditions permitting.

A fast-moving low pressure system delivered more than 14 inches of snow last Wednesday night which brought the mid-mountain base to 87 inches.

Summer Ski Season As Usual at Les 2 Alpes

Les 2 Alpes in France has announced it will be open for the 2007 summer skiing season from June 16 to September 1. The dates are in line with its regular summer opening dates.

The summer skiing area on the Girose and Mont de Lans glaciers above Les 2 Alpes and La Grave is one of the largest in Europe. There is an 800 metres vertical between 2800 metres and 3600 metres, and over 400 acres of skiable terrain. 17 lifts are open from 7am to 3pm to get the best of the snow conditions, including the underground funicular Dome Express.

World Indoor Snowkayak Championships Staged

The World Indoor Snowkayak Championships were staged at Holland’s Landgraff Indoor Ski Centre near The Hague, on March 31st and April 1st.

The little known sport of Snowkayaking is little more than a year old and centred on the Dutch market. It involves descending a snow covered slope indoors or outdoors. The World Championship events included freestyle and ‘Boater Cross.”

It’s Becoming a Smoke-Free Environment in Worldwide Ski and Travel Destinations

While the worldwide ski industry’s “green” public relations efforts concentrated on cleaner and greener energy sources for ski resorts this season, an even bigger and more immediate positive impact on skiers and the travelling public’s health are the improvements in the indoor air quality at ski resorts and other tourist destinations due to the passage of anti-smoking laws — the number of which reached a new high in 2006. Smoking is becoming a thing of the past in most ski and tourism provinces, states, and even a few nations. The places where America’s ski clubs like to ski and travel are increasingly banning smoking in their bars, restaurants, and other indoor public spaces. While that’s an inconvenience for those ski club members who smoke, it’s a blessing for the vast majority (probably 75 percent to 85 percent) of ski club members who don’t smoke.
