Thwaites ski trip row grows
FORMER deputy premier John Thwaites and his advisers took six publicly funded ski trips to Mount Hotham in recent years — including three visits to the resort in as many months last winter, according to new documents. Mr Thwaites, who resigned on the same day as former premier Steve Bracks in July, visited Mount Hotham for the opening of the season in June last year as well as making trips in July and August. The visits, revealed in documents released under freedom-of-information laws, are in addition to trips to other ski resorts including Falls Creek and Mount Buller over the same period.

Ski fanatics jump to it at outdoor adventure day
AN outdoor adventure day was held at Ski Rossendale, Rawtenstall, yesterday and attracted hundreds of people from across the North West.
Activities included skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing and slalom competitions.

Caps on foreign workers could put ski resorts in a bind
Federal regulations limiting the number of foreign workers allowed into the United States may leave Sierra ski resorts scrambling for labor this season. Resort operators say ski schools in particular could be hit hard if Congress doesn’t amend the rules.

Australian tour operator launches carbon offset calculator

Australia-based tour operator Travelplan, which organises ski trips worldwide, has taken multiple steps in the fight against climate change, including the launch of an online carbon offset facility for skiers and boarders booking a holiday through the company.

“We realise that good skiing and snowboarding is vulnerable to climate change. Snow covered slopes may not be available in the future due to rising temperatures. Luckily, we can take action today… We give skiers the option to offset the carbon emissions from your holiday when you make a booking.” said a Travelplan statement.

The concept was simple: anyone between the ages of 12-18 could come and show off their talents both in freeride and freestyle at the contest in Val Thorens.
