Steamboat Springs in Colorado set a hallmark record on March 20th when it officially broke a snow record surpassing 37 feet (11.1 metres) of accumulation in one season.

Gondola accident in Sestriere injures 14

According to local police, fourteen people suffered minor injuries when a gondola at the Olympic ski resort of Sestriere in the Italian Alps and failed to slow down as it entered the terminal on March 22.
Upon approach in summit station, the gondola continued at regular speed crashing into the support structure. Several people were taken to hospital and later released with minor injuries.
The exact cause of the incident is under investigation. Sestriere was the downhill events during the 2006 Turin Olympics.

Prince Charles, who bowed to media pressure last year by canceling his annual ski holiday to Klosters because he was going to spend £120,000 (260,000 dollars) to fly to New York to pick up the Harvard Club’s Global Environmental Citizen Award from Meryl Streep, was back in the dignified Swiss resort on March 22.

Snowstorm Creates Disaster For Easter Bunny

The Easter Bunny was reported to be “unimpressed” by 31cms of fresh snow at the base of Whistler and Blackcom Mountains on Easter morning as hundreds of coloured eggs and chocolates hidden by the Easter Rabbit himself have been further concealed with a thick layer of snow, leading the rabbit to believe they may never be found.

Save our Snow – Turn off for Earth Hour

A campaign that began in Australia last year to help mimize the use of energy is going global this coming Saturday night. Citizens from around the world are being encouraged to turn off major appliances and refrain from consuming electricity for between 8 and 9 pm on March 29th.

Patrouille des Glaciers Races Again

The “Patrouille des Glaciers” is race between Zermatt and Verbier will be staged again next month.
Participants including Swiss army soldiers and suitable skilled civilians will race from peak to peak and show off their skills on the high alpine terrain from April 16 to 20 April.
The record for completing 53km (33 mile) race is six hours, 18 minutes and 48 seconds.

Season Thru May At Zell am See-Kaprun

Austria’s Zell am See-Kaprun annual ‘Sun, Snow & Party Week’ is set to get underway this coming Saturday March 29th. This year celebrities like skiing legend Franz Klammer who will be leading a team of past and present Austrian winter sports stars who are testing the latest ski models for next season of 2008/2009.
