The Snoasis indoor snow centre planned for Great Blakenham in Suffolk has almost got the final go ahead after a long battle with local residents culminating with a lengthy public enquiry.
The government has given the go-ahead subject to certain environmental conditions. They have asked for more information on the centre’s carbon emissions. A final, final decision will be given by the Secretary of State for the environment by 17th September.

The Lee family in the Cardrona Valley received approval today to build the first gondola in New Zealand to access a ski resort.
The $16.6million gondola project will service Snow Park NZ, Waiorau Snow Farm and a third planned ski area, Roaring Meg Resort.

The ski season wrapped at Revelstoke Mountain Resort two weeks ago with 44 per cent more visits than anticipated in its first year. Selkirk Tangiers Helicopter Skiing (STHS) also reported a 20 per cent increase in skier visits.

For the third time this year, Perisher Blue has received an early white winter coat after 10-15cm of fresh snow fell in the resort from about 11am on Sunday and continuing throughout the night and in to Monday. Temperatures reached a low of –3.5C at 7.45am on Monday.

Finland’s Ruka ski area, high up close to the Arctic Circle, will again stay open to mid-June this year, clocking up what the resort believes to be the longest winter for a non-glacier resort in Europe, probably anywhere.

The Aspen Skiing Company, which endeavours to be one of the world’s most environmentally friendly resort operators, has reported that its energy consumption and carbon emissions continued to rise despite the resort’s many efforts to reverse the trend. During the period from 2000, when it produced 30,925 tons of carbon, to 2006 when it produced 32,315 tons, the most recent year for which figures are available.

The Compgnie des Alpes, the world’s largest ski resort operating company, has reported a big jump in sales for the first six months of its annual year, which started last October.
The company reports that, in a direct comparison to sales last year, turnover grew by 10.9 percent. It credits excellent snow conditions throughout the winter, international sales, quality of product and the early Easter as factors in this season’s success.
