Snow Good at some NZ Resorts as “Warm Front” ends

Heavy pre-season snowfalls and reasonable snow making conditions has Mt Hutt in great shape for early season skiing and riding according to ski area manager Dave Wilson. Commenting on the first week of operations Mr Wilson said,

We’ve enjoyed a great week of sunny skiing and riding on a 35cm snow base. There are four beginner to intermediate jibs set up in the new High Country Terrain Park and the national ski team is training. It may be a bit gloomy elsewhere in terms of snow conditions, but Mt Hutt is shining right now and the atmosphere is great.”

Mt Hutt received another 218cm of fresh snow earlier this week and The Remarkables was snowmaking after a light dusting of snow and plans to open as soon as conditions allow.
Mr Wilson was looking forward to welcoming families to the High Country Ski Area during the school holidays (from June 27).

We have several programmes available for kids at all levels from age 6 – 16, excellent learning facilities and a fully licensed Skiwiland crèche for the wee brothers and sisters.”

Mt Hutt opened on June 15th with skiing and riding from Summit to the base area.
Meanwhile Coronet Peak will celebrate the opening of a new base building following a $30m (NZ) upgrade and has re-opened today thanks to some natural snowfall and good snowmaking temperatures. 15 centimetres (six inches) of fresh snow have fallen at the top of Coronet Peak, eight centimetres at the base and that’s just Mother Nature’s contribution. Snowguns have been blasting constantly for the past 36 hours supplementing the natural falls to provide coverage across all main trails.

Cardrona Alpine Resort has also had 10-15 cm of natural snowt. This is on top of extensive snowmaking in the Main and Captain’s basins over the last two nights. Snow is expected to fall intermittently through to Thursday morning and weather permitting, Cardrona has been going since June 27.

  • Fresh new snow in Australia

The long awaited snowfalls have finally arrived in Australia and hopes are buoying snow lovers. As at 10.30am this morning, Perisher Blue has received 15cm (six inches) of fresh snow since 2.30pm Monday 30th June, blanketing the runs and leaving the resort looking wintry and white.
Coupled with 77 snowmaking guns, which fired up across parts of Perisher Valley, Blue Cow and Smiggin Holes, the snow cover is looking good. Further snowfalls, down to 1200 metres, are expected over the next couple of days.

At present Perisher Blue has 11 lifts operating across parts of Perisher Valley and Blue Cow Mountain. Riders of all abilities will enjoy the extra 15cm of natural snow on the slopes when putting in their turns. In addition there are two mini Fusion Parks open in the resort, on Front Valley and in Smiggin Holes.

Mt Hotham is reporting a 25cm snowfall over the past 24hrs with snow continuing to fall. A further 7-15cm (three – six inches) is predicted during the rest of today, 5-10cm (two – four inches) for Wednesday, and a final 1-3cm (inxh) on Thursday.

Dutch firm to invest in Czech ski resort

A Dutch firm is reported to be planning to invest 40 million Euros in the leading Czech ski resort of Pec pod Snezkou. Middle Europe Investments apparently wants to upgrade facilities in the northern Bohemian ski town.
The money would go on a new central square with underground parking garage, town hall, hotel, shops and recreational facilities in the centre of Pec. It also offers a mountain tram to the ski area and a funicular railway.
Pec mayor Alan Tomasek is reported to be in favour of the project, which would begin in 2010 or 2011 sand take about three years, whilst other local council members oppose the plan.
Middle Europe Investments already owns and manages around 40 properties in tourist destinations throughout the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
