WWF joins UNESCO in targeting European ski resort developments

The Pirin mountains are being challenged by Bansko development companies

The Pirin mountains are being challenged by Bansko development companies.

Several ski resort developments in the Balkans, Carpathians and Dolomites have been under fire from environmental interests for their impact on protected areas and forests, and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is the latest to protest.

SkiRebel.com reported recently on UNESCO’s futile efforts to stop these developments, particularly at Bulgarian ski resort Bansko. The WWF, the global nature conservation organization, has published a review of several new ski projects planned for Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine.

Copper Mountain launches promotional website

It's supposed to remain "business as usual" at Colorado's Copper Mountain ski resort.

Copper Mountain is hoping to create a new image under new ownership.

Copper Mountain in Colorado has launched a new site based on a ’snow day’ theme, the day when school is canceled due to snow and kids just go and play in the snow.

The site includes videos of interesting ’ski patrol’ characters calling for a national ski day and a feature that lets visitors generate and print fake ski patrol badges with nicknames included. But the beyond the marketing campaign, the site links to information about Copper Mountain winter vacation packages. The resort is offering a ‘buy one get one at 50 per cent or 4th night free’ deal this winter on the site.

Debt problems won’t affect resorts or Olympics: Intrawest

If you build a mountain will they come? Intrawest considering selling

If Intrawest says its cash flow is good and just sold a resort, why cant they pay off any of their debt?

After failing to hit a deadline with its creditors last week, ski resort giant Intrawest says operations are still going well, including at Olympic host resort Whistler.

The company has been going through financial troubles for some time, and recently sold one of its resorts, Colorado’s Copper Mountain as a part of a debt reduction effort. Nevertheless, Intrawest missed a deadline on December 23rd to repay just over $500 of a $1.4 billion loan, according to the Globe and Mail.

Intrawest says that its current debt negotiations will not have any impact on the upcoming Winter Olympic Games, much of which is being hosted at Intrawest’s flagship resort, Whistler-Blackcomb just north of Vancouver, Canada.
