Chinese Ski Area Debuts VIP Gondolas with Mini-Bars and BOSE Sound System

China’s leading resort of Yabuli has new owners who are currently investing heavily in new accommodation, new lifts and other facilities, all to a much higher standard than has been seen in the country before.

Indeed many of Melco China Resorts’ innovations at the North eastern Chinese ski area the company describes as, “…Well beyond the standard available in European or North American ski resorts and more consistent with the quality of hotels expected in Asian cities.”

The upgrades include a new heated gondola for the resort’s VIP guests, which goes one better than the heated gondolas already operation in Europe and North America in that the cabins will feature polished timber trim, leather seating, a mini bar, cabin lighting, and a BOSE stereo system.

Melco’s Sun Mountain development at Yabuli, which is located 2.5 hours south-east of Harbin by road or 90 minutes by train, currently has three premium hotels under construction (two at the base of the mountain, one at the of the mountain, Sun Mountain Lodge, recently invited to be part of the coveted collection, Small Luxury Hotels of the World). These will add 312 rooms including 24 luxury sky suites with sauna, outdoor hot tub and observatory due to be completed by December 2008.

Melco China Resorts is the largest operator and developer of world-class ski resorts in China. Currently transforming one existing ski area in Beijing and four existing ski areas in the North Eastern provinces of Heilongjiang and Jili. Skier numbers in China are predicted to more than double to reach 10-million skier visits by 2010.

World University Games come to China

Although the Beijing Olympics have now closed and attention switches to the coming World Alpine Ski Championships in Val d’Isere next winter and the 2010 Olympics the season after, China is still to host one more major international contest, and this time its snow sports.

The 24th edition of the World University Games, also known as the ‘Universiade’ will be held in the country’s skiing capital city Harbin, 800km (500 miles) north of Beijing and a former host of the Asian Winter Games.

The ski events will be held at Sun Mountain Yabuli, the country’s original resort in the late 1990s, from which (at last report) 300 new ski centres have developed across the country over the past decade. The resort is now operated by Melco China Resorts Ltd, established for only six months, but already owner of half a dozen major ski areas in the country, making it the Chinese equivalent of Vail.

The company is busy converting these areas in to up-market developments with year round attractions, and has signed up the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels of the World group, which has properties in many of the world’s top resorts, for one of its properties.

At Yabuli MELCO is adding heated gondolas and new hotels at the top and bottom of the slopes as part of a $25m spend. The number of skiers in China is expected to reach 10 million by 2010 from a standing start in 1996.

World’s highest gondola lift kick starts in China

The world’s newest and highest altitude gondola has opened in China. Doppelmayr has just finished completing a new gondola with eight passenger cabins which reaches 4,843m above sea level the highest recorded project in the world. The lift accesses The Aba Great Glacier in Sichuan province, about six hours driving time from regional capital Chengdu.

Snow Centre planned in China as new rail link is opened days before Summer Olympics

The completion of a high seed rail link between China’s capital Beijing and the city of Tianjin has reportedly led to plans to accelerate the “economic integration of the cities” according to a report from the region’s council entitld “Suggestions on Promoting Development and Opening-up of Tianjin Binhai Development Zone” .

Along with the 120km express railway which was completed on June 30th and regular passenger service began on August 1st allowing the train to reach speeds of 300 kph (190 mph) and chopping commuting times from 2 hours to 30 minutes.

Despite fears of a depression in the Chinese housing market there are hopes of a property revival in Tianjin as prices here were much lower than Beijing, but with the new fast rail link are expected to rise as commuting becomes much more viable. In response where housing firms such as the Singyaoo Group has already bought a 734 hectare piece of land in the southwest part of the city.

Singyaoo is planning to build a “new downtown” in Jiahu district consisting of living and recreational facilities such as an enormous indoor ski run, swimming and surfing pool, a pedestrian mall and a seven-star hotel designed by Richard Mayer, a leading US architect. China CITIC Bank will provide a loan of 20 billion yuan for the mammoth construction project.

Burton opens Beijing Terrain Park

Burton has become the main sponsor of China’s first indoor terrain park which opened at the capital’s Qiaobo indoor snow centre a few weeks ago.

The Chinese Olympic Committee had already said they wanted a year round training facility for their athletes ahead of the 2010 Games, but this facility is open to all.

China’s largest ski operator rakes in $ 1-billion

Melco China which owns China’s leading ski resorts has reported a 27% growth in revenue to top $1 billion (Hong Kong). Melco China Resort Investment Limited, a division of the larger company, has become the country’s leading ski resort operator in the past 12 months through purchase of China’s leading resort of Yabuli near the city of Harbin in Heilongjiang Province, three ski areas in Jilin Province and another one close to the capital Beijing.

In March 2007, working with the world’s top industry experts, MCR has identified the largest and most exceptional portfolio of irreplaceable, existing ski resorts with the best mountains, location advantages, dominant market positions and healthy expansion potential,”

said a company statement.

“Overall, I am pleased with our achievements in 2007. Melco is well-positioned as one of the dynamic conglomerates in Asia in the new era characterized by consumers eager for new experiences and living life to the fullest. The Mainland China market offers enormous potential and vast consumer demand which will no doubt fuel the growth of our lottery operations and ski resort developments. We expect our Group to continue to deliver strong performance and shareholder value in the forthcoming year,” said company chairman Mr. Ho.

China’s First Luxury Ski Area Delays Opening

PingTian ski resort in northwest China has decided to delay its opening to November 2008.
Resort President & CEO, Thomas Ching, said that there were two main factors affected the scheduling change. Firstly he said, the company did not want to proceed with the development until they could meet their self-imposed strict standards for quality.
