
Plans for a more modest snow complex are moving ahead in Calverton
Plans for a large indoor snow centre for Calverton at Long Island in the US have moved forward in the past few weeks with developers Riverhead Resorts asking the town authorities for final approval of its $2.2 billion project on 750 acres of land. If the plan is approved, the company can complete their purchase of the property by the end of the year. Reports indicate the sale price has dropped from $150 million in 2007 to $100 million due to the declining value of land in the area.

China announced plans to build the biggest indoor ski slope in the world
China has announced plans to build the world’s longest indoor ski slope, when the first kilometer (3,300ft) long indoor slope opens in the city of Guangzhou near Hong Kong.
Guangzhou will characterize itself with a slope of 1 000m in length within a potential market of 100 million peoble living an hours drive within the city.

The SnowDome De Uithof in the Netherlands filed for bankruptcy this morning citing operational difficulties.
Citing operational difficulties beyond its control, the SnowDome De Uithof in the Netherlands filed for bankruptcy this morning following a spate of major operational problems SkiRebel magazine has learned.
The centre, which was the country’s fifth to open, ten years ago and was the largest facility of its kind until a bigger facility was built in Germany a couple of years later, saw the roof of the adjoining ice rink collapse last winter due to the weight of snow which triggered a series of sequential events leading to its closure.

Snowboarder Nicolien Sauerbreij made Dutch Olympic history when she became the first athlete from her country to win a medal in a snow discipline.
The 30-year old’s medal in the Ladies parallel giant slalom was also the 100th for the Netherlands in Olympic history. The Dutch are traditional powerhouses in speed skating, but not alpine skiing or snowboarding.
Sauerbreij did much of her training at Dutch indoor snow slope SnowWorld Landgraaf, and staff there are very proud of her accomplishment.
