Increased snow raises avalanche risks across Europe and North America

Snow forecast Ski France, Ski Resorts, New Projects, holiday, vacation, snow.

Alpe d’Huez was the scene of the most recent avalanche claiming the life of a local skier

The man, a known paragliding instructor, was skiing with four other people, was pronounced dead at the scene of the avalanche.

Speed riding involves skiing down a slope with a canopy and mix skiing with flying.

Recent snowfalls across Europe have made the snowpack unstable and operators are asking skiers to ski within the boundaries of ski resorts. This is the first death reported in France. Last week a 16-year old British skier died at the Austrian resort of Lech.

In Canada a snowboarder lost his life at the BC Resort of Kicking Horse.

While there are a number of snow storms forecast in North America and Europe over the Christmas holidays, officials are warning that there could elevated dangers in the backcountry by those skiers tempted to seek untapped powder.

Killington Ski Resort is the place to be for fresh powder this week

It’s been a third week of largely snowless, often sunny skies across much of the Alps. All is expected to change as new fresh snow is expected to blanket most of the Alps this coming weekend. This should be welcome news for skiers headed out for the holidays.

Across the Atlantic the biggest snow storms of the past seven days were, unusually for North America, reported on the east coast with resorts in New England reporting up to 40cm of snow in 24 hours and 60cm (two feet) in 48 hours.

The snow that’s missing in the Alps seems to be falling abundantly in the Middle East where great conditions (once the roads were cleared) were reported on Lebanon’s slopes. Continue reading ‘Heavy snow back in Eastern North America, first snow in Cairo for 110 years’
