The new Avoriaz cable car pictured here at a trade show is almost ready to go.

A brand new lift is set to open this month (January 2013) that links the resorts of Avoriaz and Morzine at Portes du Soleil. The new lift will be replacing the old cable car and it will have a dozen 35-passenger cabins.

The ski area has invested more than 36.5 million euros ($ 48-M USD) a fraction of the 200-million($265-million USD) upgrade and retrofit of Avoriaz which includes new accommodations and a swimming complex.

The new lift was scheduled to open at the start of the season, but construction issues caused delays in the project launch.  The new Prodains funitel, links  Morzine with the Avoriaz, at a speed of 7 metres per second with an overall capacity of 2,000 to 2,400 people per hour. Only six lifts of this type are currently in use worldwide.

Red Mountain expansion to be massive by scale. Impressive to say the least!

The announcement that Red Mountain Resort near Rossland, would be expanding its already impressive terrain onto the slopes of nearby Grey Mountain is a bit premature since a new lift will not be fully operational until next season, but Red is currently what just might be the best deal going in all of North American Skiing.  Continue reading ‘Red Mountain expansion a ‘Game Changer’’
