Infographic of the week: The impact of Glacial Retreat

This week we focus on the impact of global warming on the retreat of glaciers. Glaciers worldwide have lost significant ice mass and the impact is not only on the enjoyment of winter mountain sports, but the spring meltwaters are crucial sources for crop irrigation. A quick meltdown could cause rising flood waters that could spell devastation for the underlying valleys below as we saw with the early summer floods in Calgary this summer.  Since the 1970′s the Mont Blanc glacier has receded by 25% and the World Glacier Monitoring Service suggests that if the pace of global warming continues most glaciers in Europe will be reduced by 5-10% of what we see now. What action do you think is feasible to save the world’s glaciers? We’d love to read your thoughts. Continue reading ‘Infographic of the week: The impact of Glacial Retreat’

The new Avoriaz cable car pictured here at a trade show is almost ready to go.

A brand new lift is set to open this month (January 2013) that links the resorts of Avoriaz and Morzine at Portes du Soleil. The new lift will be replacing the old cable car and it will have a dozen 35-passenger cabins.

The ski area has invested more than 36.5 million euros ($ 48-M USD) a fraction of the 200-million($265-million USD) upgrade and retrofit of Avoriaz which includes new accommodations and a swimming complex.

The new lift was scheduled to open at the start of the season, but construction issues caused delays in the project launch.  The new Prodains funitel, links  Morzine with the Avoriaz, at a speed of 7 metres per second with an overall capacity of 2,000 to 2,400 people per hour. Only six lifts of this type are currently in use worldwide.
