Alpensia ski resort was a part of South Korea's Olympic bid for 2014, and will be a part of its 2018 bid.

Following the opening of Mongolia’s first proper ski resort last Wednesday, South Korea’s latest centre opened on Friday, the tenth ski area to open in Gangwon province.

Alpensia ski resort has opened with seven slopes. Five are for skiing, one is a dedicated snowboarding terrain park and one is designed for sledging. There are more than 5km (3mi) of runs descending from a top station at 700m (2300ft) above sea level.

Two new ski resorts have opened in Korea in the past week. Konjiam Resort in Gwangju, Gyeonggi, is one of the closest resorts to Seoul, only 40 minutes away to the north. It opened on Friday with 11 slopes, each 100m wide on average and suitable for beginners and children.
Four of the 11 slopes have been officially approved by the International Ski Federation, including its Super Pipe.

A second indoor snow centre has been proposed for Korea. Ice Park will be built on Jeju Island. Along with a snow slope the facility will include a short track speed skating rink.

The International City Development Center announced that the Jeju IcePark will be a core project of the international free city. It will cover and area of some 700,000 square metres and cost some W900 billion (US$1=W1,264) to build.

The ice rink will accommodate 10,000 people, and there will also be an ice cliff for climbing, an ice and snow sculpture park, a penguin town, and a park with bobsleigh rides.

The Development Center believes Ice Park will generate W345 billion for the region and create 10,000 jobs.

Since migrating the PDF only online ski magazine to a more user friendly online format, magazine management is ecstatic with the initial results. So far 2008, SportsRebel Media Ventures (SMV) Ltd., the main shareholder of the online property is forecasting tripling online visits. So far the first week forecast is blowing that forecast out of the water.
