The SnowDome De Uithof in the Netherlands filed for bankruptcy this morning citing operational difficulties.

Citing operational difficulties beyond its control, the SnowDome De Uithof in the Netherlands filed for bankruptcy this morning following a spate of major operational problems SkiRebel magazine has learned.
The centre, which was the country’s fifth to open, ten years ago and was the largest facility of its kind until a bigger facility was built in Germany a couple of years later, saw the roof of the adjoining ice rink collapse last winter due to the weight of snow which triggered a series of sequential events leading to its closure.

Dutch eco group looks forward to mountain cleaning season

The result of one day of summer mountain cleanup.

Mountain clean up events are an emerging trend in increasingly green Europe, and one Dutch group is looking forward to a summer season of picking up trash.

The Dutch Respect the Mountains organisation, not to be confused with The Ski Club of Great Britain’s Respect The Mountain initiative, is hoping to run some of these events this summer.

Last summer the organisation ran two highly successful EnviroTreks events. The first of these was staged on the ski slopes above the Austrian resort town of Mayrhofen. Mountain bike guides led more than 40 people on the clean up, with 12 bin bags full of trash collected in only two hours of cleaning up.

Ski indoors and outdoors at the same place

Snow World Landgraaf in the Netherlands gives skiers both options this month.

Right beside the Netherlands’ massive indoor snow centre, Snow World Landgraaf, cold weather has led to the opening of a 2km outdoor ski run on the same hill the snow dome is built on.

According to a report, skiers have ridden the indoor centre’s six-seat chairlift, walked out an emergency exit door, and acessed the outdoor slope since it was opened on January 9th. The temporary trail winds down around the 90m high Wilhelmina mountain.

Snow World Landgraaf, with its 550m slope, is the world’s largest year round indoor snow centre. It’s built on the side of Wilhelmina mountain, which is in fact a spoil heap from a former mine.
