Eight Indian soldiers to pick up Everest garbage and ski back down the mountain

Eight members of the Indian army plan to ski down Mount Everest in September, almost doubling the number of people who are believed to have already ski down Everest (about half of them, unsuccessfully – with a number never reaching the bottom).
The eight will be part of a larger team of 28 members of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police who will all climb to Everest’s 8,850m summit and collect rubbish left lying on the top of the mountain by previous expeditions. The 20 non-skiers will return with the collected rubbish on foot.

The Deutsche Press agency (www.dpa.de) has reported that Pakistan’s military have pushed Taliban militants out of the country’s former ski resort, Malam Jabba in the Swat Valley in the north-west of the country.

Deutsche Press reports that the resort was destroyed by loyalists of local cleric Maulana Fazlullah last year and subsequently used as a Taliban head quarters and training ground.

Pakistan reports that more than two million people have been displaced and more than 1,100 insurgents and over 60 troops killed in the current offensive by the Pakistan army aimed at re-capturing this part of the country from the Taliban.

Islamic Fundamentalists Launch Arson Attack On Ski Resort

Islamic fundamentalists attacked buildings at Pakistan’s Malam Jabba ski resort last week. Pakistan’s only international standard resort is located in the Swat Valley, 300k m (190 miles) from capital Islamabad and close to the Afghan border.

The region was once the country’s leading summer tourist destinations due to its great natural beauty.

CNN reports that the Islamic militants, who wish to establish fundamentalist Sharia Islamic law, forced their way in to the hotel, looted it and then set it on fire, causing what local police described as “Significant damage.”

The ski area was originally built in 1988 in cooperation with Austrian specialists. It remained ‘mothballed’ for a decade before finally being opening by Pakistan’s president in the late 1990s. It is equipped with two chair lifts, a hotel, restaurants and a coffee shop.
