Bialka Tatrzanska resort comes of age

A little more than a decade ago, winter was deadly quiet for Kotelnica Mountain with the blanket of snow keeping it company.

Now, Kotelnica has emerged as a one of the most vibrant resorts with ski fans flocking to one of the trendiest resorts in Poland.

The 17th-century village at the foot of the Tatra mountains in southern Poland was making a modest living on farming and sheep breeding. But in 2000, that changed when about 50 farmers began a joint venture to develop a ski resort, on par with those in Austria and Switzerland.

Bialka Tatrzanska, about an hour and a half drive from Krakow, is among Poland’s leading centers for skiers, though less demanding and more modest compared with many West European resorts.

A recent ranking by Poland’s ski centers by the Onet.pl Internet portal listed it as the country’s second most popular ski resort based on quality of slopes and other amenities. In first place was Krynica Gorska, which has been around longer and boasts more challenging slopes.

Designer shops idea for futuristic slopeside eco-hotel

The incorporated ski slope down the side of the hotel makes Michael Jantzen's design rather unique.

American designer Michael Jantzen is hoping he’s come up with a revolutionary idea for a slopeside eco-friendly ski hotel.

Jantzen’s North Slope Ski Hotel is a 95-room luxury hotel primarily powered by wind and solar power, with many other eco-friendly elements. Most striking about the design is the shape of the hotel, which incorporates a 400-foot ski slope. Guests would be able to take an elevator to the top and ski down the side into the surrounding landscape.

New ski area to open in Poland

Nestled between the borders of Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic, the Lower Silesian spa town of Świeradów-Zdrój (also known as Bad Flinsberg), has been a popular health resort for centuries.
This winter the resort will become one of Europe’s newest ski centres thanks to the installation of Poland’s first eight-passenger gondola lift by Doppelmayr.

Construction of the new lift to the 1,107 m high “Heufuder” mountain will open up the new skiing area where snow making has been installed on the new piste and a full range of facilities created in the gondola base station.
The new lift travels 2,171 m to make its 443m vertical ascent in just over seven minutes, carrying up to 2,400 passengers per hour.
The ski area’s owners. Sobiesław Zasada is Poland’s biggest Mercedes dealer. The group also operates hotels and leisure centres.
