Fifty people introduced to skiing in Scotland as part of world snow day celebrations

Up to fifty skiers were introduced to skiing during World Ski Day celebrations at Cairngorm.

As part of an international celebration of snow, ‘World Snow Day’ last Sunday, January 22nd, Cairngorm Mountain (www.cairngormmountain.org) above Aviemore in Scotland introduced a group of fifty first-timers to skiing and snowboarding free of charge as part of a competition to mark the event. The start of commercial skiing heralded 50 years later

Katriona McIntyre was the first person to board the Cairngorm white chair when it began operating fifty years ago last month.

 

CairnGorm Mountain’s famous White Lady chairlift, made a brief re-appearance last week when its very first passenger found herself seated on the chair that began commercial skiing operations in Scotland fifty years ago.

Cairngorm Mountain offering Pathway to Podium racing camps this winter.

Aspiring young ski racers are being offered a new concept in ski race camps this winter at Cairngorm Mountain. The Alpine Training Centre (ATC / www.alpinetrainingcentre.com), run by the British Children’s Alpine Ski Team coach Sean Langmuir, is offering camps for talented young skiers during the school holidays and weekend programmes spanning the winter season. The Midlothian Snow-sports Centre at Hillend, in Edinburgh, which already operates one of the world’s biggest artificial-ski slope surfaces has submitted a planning application for an extra 210-metre slope, another 80 metre nursery slope, upgrading existing nursery slopes, new tubing runs and two new conveyor lifts. Nevis Ski Range to have a new lodge.

The ground has been broken toward a new café bar restaurant at the base of the Nevis Range mountain gondola, near Fort William. The new facility will replace the existing coffee shop that is 20 years old, and will cater to a growing number of customers for sightseeing, skiers and snowboarders and mountain bikers.
