Chemmy Alcott to be torchbearer during London Summer Games


Britain’s Hall of Fame skier, Chemmy Alcott will carry the Olympic torch during during its 70 day journey from Land’s End to the Olympic Stadium on July 24th.

The national torch relay involving more than 8,000 people begins its journey May 19 and will cross the journey before arriving at the site of the Olympic ceremony on July 27th. Alcott will carry the torch through the London Borough of Ealing. 

“It is an amazing honour and privilege to be selected to carry the Olympic Torch and to be part of the most important and prestigious sporting event in the world,” said Chemmy who hopes to be back representing Britain at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Lake Tahoe considering an Olympic bid for 2022

California and Nevada have launched an exploration of a possible bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Fifty-two years after the Olympic flame was first ignited in the Tahoe region, California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom and Nevada Lieutenant Governor Brian Krolicki announced today (April 5) the formation of the Lake Tahoe Winter Games Exploratory Committee (LTWGEC), a new joint California Nevada initiative dedicated to developing an Olympic Bid for the 2022 Winter Games.  Continue reading ‘Lake Tahoe considering an Olympic bid for 2022′

The International Olympic Committee has delayed a decision to allow women to participate in ski jumping events.

Canada’s Bilodeau to teach at Whistler summer camp

Canadian Olympic hero Alex Bilodeau is going to give some young skiers the experience of a lifetime this summer.

The first Canadian to win a gold medal on home soil will join the roster of coaches at Whistler’s Momentum Ski Camps this year. Bilodeau won gold at the Vancouver Olympics in the men’s moguls.

Momentum Ski Camps will feature some of the world’s best skiers coaching at their summer ski camp at Whistler-Blackcomb, many of whom began their preeminent professional ski careers as Momentum campers.

Dutch boarder welcomed at second Netherlands snowdome

Dutch Snowboarder Nicolien Sauerbreij had a second triumphant home coming to the Netherlands at the end of the season last month.

Nicolien who won the country’s first ever Alpine sports gold medal in snowboarding at the Vancouver Olympics returned to celebrate her win at SnowWorld Zoetermeer where she had carried out a lot of her training.

Hundreds of Dutch Winter Sports fans were there to honour Nicolien who reported she was very happy with all the attention.

FIS comissions study into ski racing safey

After an Olympic games which saw several absences and near-absences in the alpine skiing disciplines, FIS has begun looking into how to make the sport safer.

The University of Salzburg has begun a three year study in to all the dangers involved in Alpine ski racing at the behest of the International Ski Federation (FIS). The move follows an initiative by the world’s leading ski racers to highlight some of the dangers they think exist and could be reduced in their sport.

In the 2008-2009 season, 43 per cent of all alpine World Cup skiers sustained some kind of injury, and 23 of them were ruled out for at least eight days, according to FIS statistics. This season has seen similar stats on injured racers, with the Canadian team particularly hard hit ahead of the Vancouver games.

Whistler’s post-Olympics international fame is quantifiable

Whistler-Blackcomb ski resort in British Columbia, Canada.

An estimated 3.5 billion people around the world watching the Games on their televisions and online.

That was a big boost for the already-famous ski resort and Olympic co-host Whistler-Blackcomb. Based on a study conducted by Tourism Whistler in partnership with Tourism British Columbia, awareness of Whistler increased significantly in the key overseas markets of United Kingdom, Germany and Australia.

The study measured awareness of Whistler before and after the 2010 Winter Games. It found that British awareness of Whistler increased from 32 per cent to 45 percent, and German awareness increased from 19 per cent to 42 per cent.  In Australia, already the most aware with 48 per cent of Australians knowing about Whistler before the Games, 62 per cent were aware afterwards.
