California and Nevada have launched an exploration of a possible bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Fifty-two years after the Olympic flame was first ignited in the Tahoe region, California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom and Nevada Lieutenant Governor Brian Krolicki announced today (April 5) the formation of the Lake Tahoe Winter Games Exploratory Committee (LTWGEC), a new joint California Nevada initiative dedicated to developing an Olympic Bid for the 2022 Winter Games. Canadian slalom skier Brad Spence has had knee surgery to alleviate pain that has progressively grown more acute and had reached a point that it has become, he said, “a limiting factor.”
Spence, from Calgary, traveled to London, Ontario for the surgery to his right knee, performed by orthopedic surgeon Bob Litchfield. Dr. Litchfield performed micro-fracture surgery to repair damaged cartilage. Spence is expected to be on crutches for six weeks or so, but no timeline has been established for his return to snow. 
American ski racing star and three-time Olympic medalist Julia Mancuso has signed a three-year agreement with Head skis.
The deal, announced today (April 2) by Head, will keep the seven-time World Cup winner on Head equipment through the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games and 2015 Val/Beaver Creek World Championships.
Mancuso was previously racing on Volkl skis (since 2010) and Lange boots (since 2005) and will now make the switch to Head skis and boots and bindings.
Mancuso joins boyfriend Aksel Lund Svindal, Bode Miller, Lindsey Vonn and Ted Ligety on the Head World Cup Rebels team.

Hans Olsson broke his leg in the European Cup Finals downhill competition in La Thuile (ITA) today (March 15).
Olsson crashed heavily half way down the track after hitting a bump in the snow and falling backwards. Preliminary examinations indicated a broken shin bone and fibula of his right leg. He was transported to Hospital in Aosta for further examination.
"It was simply bad luck. Hans was skiing well when he hit a snow bump and the inner ski cut in. He fell backwards and got bounced around," said the speed coach Helmuth Krug.
Krug said the athlete was in great pain, but said, "Despite the situation, he was in relatively good mood."
Olsson plans to travel to Innsbruck as soon as possible for an operation.
Mattia Casse of Italy won the race over Christian Spescha of Switzerland. Austrian Johannes Kroell claimed the Europa Cup DH title.
