Snowboarder hit and run making headlines in California

According to local media reports, authorities in Southern California are looking for a snowboarder that fled the scene after colliding with and severely injuring a 9-year-old girl at Bear Mountain Ski Resort.

The girl, named Haylee Melendez, is reportedly suffered a compound fracture to her thigh bone and severe facial injuries.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department told media that a man between 25 and 30 years old, between 5’10″ and 6’2″ tall, hit the girl Saturday at the resort in Big Bear Lake then continued down the run without checking on the victim.

Authorities are seeking the public’s help in finding the man, who they say wore a black-and-white jacket and black pants and used a black snowboard. It is a violation of California law to leave the scene of a skiing accident except to seek help.

“We were side by side from each other. I looked out the corner of my eye and I saw something flying down and just hit her straight head on from the back,” the victim’s mother Ronnie Melendez told local TV.
