Ski season kicks off in North America while snowstorms hit east

A-Basin to add new quad chair

Arapahoe Basin, known as A-Basin, is one of the world's ten highest ski resorts.

Colorado’s Arapahoe Basin ski resort has announced it will build a new 4-person chairlift this summer.

The new lift will replace its 32 year old Exhibition triple chairlift with a new high speed quad, costing 4 million dollars. It will be named the Black Mountain Express.

“With its increased capacity, shorter ride time and ease of loading, the new detachable chairlift will be a tremendous benefit for our guests,” said Alan Henceroth, Arapahoe Basin’s CEO.

Weekly snow report: Early snow heralds first may opening in a decade

The European based website site ski info reports that as mid-May approaches the number of northern hemisphere ski areas still open has dropped below 50 – less than the number of indoor snow centres to choose from! But more heavy snow in New Zealand means that Mt Hutt is hoping to open two weeks ahead of schedule, and for the first time in a decade this would mean a May opening in just a few weeks.
