Vermont men prosecuted for cutting ski run near Jay Peak

Two Vermont men who cut down nearly 1,000 trees using chain saws to create a 650m long ski run in 2007 have been given suspended sentences of 18 and 36 months the local Burlington Free Press has reported.
Alan Ritter, 47, of North Troy, and Paul Poulin, 48, of Derby, cut the train to use as their own ski run.
The two men, both in their late 40S, who were also given 60 day community service orders, have not given reasons for their actions. They were charged under US laws against “unlawful mischief.”
The land where they felled the trees, now known locally as ‘the scar’ is located on Big Jay mountain, but skiers and boarders are now no longer allowed to hike up to and ski or board down it.
State forest officials estimate replacing the the trees will cost about $50,000, not counting the labour.
