Russian resort builds mountain of metal

Could this start a trend of building ski villages at the top of the hill?

A huge metal frame has been built at the top of the short slope at the new Kvan Alpine Ski Centre near Kaluga in Western Russia.

The structure is 20 metres (about 65 feet) high and there are plans to build a restaurant, hotel and some office buildings within the frame. The structure is 108 metres (350 feet) long and 45.7-metres (150 feet) wide.

The structure adds about 25% to the centre’s vertical and slope length. The elevated steel framework was designed and built by construction company Ruukki, with the aim of merging smoothly into the natural slope below.
